Considering building a steel shed? You likely have questions about design, construction, maintenance, and more. Discover the answers to some of the most frequently asked questions about steel sheds below, and get the information you need to make an informed decision.

Do I need a permit?

Before the construction of your new steel shed, it is important to check permit regulations set in your state or local council area. Each state and territory in Australia has its own requirements around building permits, usually a private building surveyor can assist you with the process.

In most cases, you aren’t required to obtain a planning permit, unless your property has overlays, the shed’s location does not meet required setbacks, or your intended use for the shed is not an approved use of the land.

You may need other permits, such as:

  • Asset protection permits.
  • Report and consent approvals.
  • Demolition permits, if any existing structure needs to be removed.
  • Vegetation removal permits, if any vegetation removal controls are applicable to the property.

How durable are steel sheds?

Unlike wooden structures, steel sheds offer a greater level of durability. Additionally, when built with the right materials, they can also provide a higher level of longevity. By using high-quality products like hot-dipped galvanised steel, your shed can last up to 70 years without rust or corrosion. It’s important to note that while the initial cost of hot-dipped galvanised steel may be higher, its durability reduces ongoing maintenance costs making it cost-effective in the long term.

How much does a steel shed cost?

Steel shed prices can vary based on a range of factors, including size, building materials, and the complexity of construction. To help you budget for your project, we’ve put together an approximate list of costs based on the previous work we have done for our clients.

What does installation look like?

Once you have received the necessary approvals to build your steel shed, we begin the installation process. This typically occurs through the following steps:

  1. Shed fabrication: The materials for your structure are ordered and manufactured based on your drawings. This process may take some time, depending on the design and size of your shed.

  2. Site preparation: The site for your new shed is cleared of any vegetation and leveled to ensure the structure remains sturdy.

  3. Foundations: The earth is dug to make way for your shed foundations. Once foundations are installed, the slab for your new shed is poured.

  4. Shed installation: The materials for your new shed are delivered to the site and installed based on your specifications.

What maintenance is required?

It can be easy to believe that building a shed is a ‘set and forget’ project but like any structure, they need ongoing maintenance to keep their value. Here are some tips to keep your steel shed in tip-top shape:

  • Check the interior for rodents or pests.
  • Check any doors and windows for cracks or rust.
  • Keep your exterior clean to ensure it always looks its best.
  • Check the interior for water spots, moisture, or other leaks.
  • Examine the exterior for fading paint, dents, and scratches.
  • Ensure your shed is built with hot-dipped galvanised steel so it lasts a lifetime.

Do the weather and environment matter?

Quality steel sheds can withstand extreme temperatures, excessive rain, and other weather-related events. However, it’s important to factor wind ratings into the construction process.

Wind ratings assist in determining how strong the winds are likely to be in a particular area. Each is based on a range of factors, including geographic region, topography, terrain, and shielding. Before construction, it’s important to ensure your shed will be rated highly enough for your area.
