Inverell Regional Livestock Exchange (IRLX) saleyards
Project overview
The Inverell Livestock Exchange (IRX) is part of the expanding Regional Livestock Exchange (RLX) network — a company dedicated to developing modern, strategically located livestock facilities that support regional growth. RLX focuses on transport efficiency, stock handling, and long-term sustainability, ensuring their centres meet the evolving needs of Australia’s livestock industry.
After acquiring the Inverell facility in 2012, RLX began planning a major upgrade that included covering existing cattle selling pens to enhance animal welfare, improve safety for buyers and agents, and increase year-round usability.
Central Steel Build was engaged to design, fabricate, and install a custom saleyard cover, tailored to integrate seamlessly with existing infrastructure and withstand the environmental demands of a busy regional livestock operation.

Challenges and solutions
Collaboration with the RLX design team was key to ensuring the new cover aligned perfectly with existing cattle yard layouts without interrupting operational flow.
One major design challenge was to meet site drainage requirements — specifically, that all overhead stormwater flow to a designated discharge point. Central Steel Build’s engineering team devised a site-specific water management solution, ensuring structural efficiency and compliance with environmental standards.
With site levels varying by up to five metres, we conducted a detailed site survey and created a 3D model of the yard layout to determine precise column lengths and footing positions. This digital modelling process ensured exceptional accuracy and a smooth installation on-site.
The finished saleyard cover provides improved safety, comfort, and functionality, reinforcing RLX’s commitment to sustainable livestock infrastructure across Australia.
